By Phoebe Thomas:

Summer Music Festivals

The Côte d’Azur (French Riviera) is famous the world over for its hedonistic lifestyle, beautiful coast and dramatic landscape, glamorous cities and a fabulous climate. So what better place than this to enjoy magical outdoor summer music festivals? And we have them in abundance from June to August on the Côte d’Azur, covering a variety of genres and musical tastes from world to classical, jazz to electronic and most styles in between. All these music festivals take place in unique and beautiful locations. Continue reading here for details on these picks for the top 8 music festivals. Cote d’Azur Music

The fête de music takes place every year on the summer solstice, June 21st. On that evening you do not have to search too far to find free music. There are always bands playing at local bars, and in open-air settings, it is a very festive evening.

Nice Jazz Festival July 16 – 20, 2019. Imagine it’s another one of those impossibly, beautiful summer nights in Nice. The sea is blue, blue, blue, the pastel colours of the Old Town buildings are glowing in the sunset of another perfect day on the Mediterranean, and French jazz fans are out for one of the best summer jazz festivals you can find.

For a week in late July, the Jardin Albert 1 is cordoned off into two separate stages for the annual Nice Jazz Festival. From more traditional jazz artists such as Christian McBride, Herbie Hancock & Joshua Redman to triphop, blues and flamenco-infused jazz (Camille Bertault, Mary J Blige, & Da Soul Live Band), it’s always a surprising and satisfying experience.

Jazz-a-Juan July 12-21, 2019. Close to Nice, Juan les Pins is about 20 minutes by train. You can easily attend both concerts on your travels to the French Riviera. Although Nice can proudly claim its title as the first jazz festival in the world, the Jazz-a-Juan Festival is as historic as the Nice Festival as you will see from the handprints along the sidewalk in front of the festival grounds: Sidney Bechet, Miles Davis, and Ray Charles, to name a few.

Saint Jazz Cap-Ferrat August 11-14, 2019. A lovely festival that runs for just a few evenings. It takes place in a tiny venue in the lovely town of Saint Jean, overlooking the sea, under the massive pines.

Nuits du Sud July 19, August 2, 2019. takes place in Place du Grand Jardin in Vence. This musical event started in 1998, but it’s not just about the tunes. There is street art, petanque and more.
