What’s Playing at Carrières des Lumières in 2024 in Les Baux de Provence?

In 2024, as usual, there will be two new immersive exhibitions at Carrières des Lumières: the long programme on the pharos and a short programme. The extended programme is about Egyptian Pharaohs, from Cheops to Ramses II, and the short programme should be interesting: ‘The Orientalists. Ingres, Delacroix, Gérôme…’ about French artists who travelled to North Africa. Please continue reading here for the original Aixcentric article. The new show that promises to transport you from ancient Egypt along the Nile starts on April 19, 2024, and runs until January 5, 2025.

Key Visitor Tips for Carrières des Lumières

Buy your tickets online to avoid the lineup. You can also purchase a combination ticket to access the Château des Baux-de-Provence.

The best time to visit Carrières des Lumières is early morning or late afternoon after 17 hours; otherwise, parking can be challenging.

The projection typically lasts about 35-40 minutes and repeats throughout the day. Once you have paid the entry fee, you can stay and watch the loop as many times as you like.

Carrières des Lumières is the largest fixed multimedia installation in France. The 14-metre-high walls are the backdrop 70 video projectors use to broadcast images.

The show is suitable for anyone with mobility issues as there are few stairs and wheelchair (or baby pram) ramps where necessary.

The space’s interior is fresh, which is fabulous on a hot summer day. However, it can feel cold, so bringing a sweater or coverup is best.

The Café des Carrières is on-site for a drink or light snack and open daily.

Open daily:
January, March, November and December: 10h-18h
April, May, June, September and October: 9h30-19h
July and August: 9h30-19h30
The last entry is one (1) hour before closing

Lynne Alderson

Aixcentric was set up by Lynne Alderson three years ago as a channel to send out info on events taking place around Aix as well as news, relevant books, the latest films, new shops and of course where to eat locally. Why?

According, to Lynne:

"It came about out of frustration with the lack of communication in the town. Posters would suddenly go up about an event that week. No prewarning. I had difficulty too in finding information from many of the tourist offices. Things are slowly getting better and there is sometimes information in English. Hopefully by keeping an eagle eye on the local press and talking with contacts in town, I can publicize fun things that people would otherwise miss. It's a ragbag of info that I come across on my travels. I've published nearly 600 posts now and have lots of followers so hopefully, it is fulfilling its role of helping people, residents and visitors alike, get the most of their time in Aix."

For what is going on in Aix-en-Provence, Lynne has you covered at Aixcentric
