Mont Sainte Victoire Hiking My Recommendations for Great Walks

Students who join me in Provence for a French immersion experience want to improve their French and explore the region. Our home and Mas de Trois Pins studio are in Rousset, a village near Mont Sainte Victoire. This article highlights a few of the hiking trails on this mountain. It is in English, followed by French, so you can improve your language skills before visiting.

Artistic Mont Sainte Victoire

Mont Sainte Victoire was a recurring subject in Paul Cézanne’s paintings. The painter, born in Aix-en-Provence, completed over 30 canvases, in oil and watercolour, of the mountain to the east of the city. On the other hand, Pablo Picasso chose not to paint “Cézanne’s Mountain” out of respect for the grand master’s work. With the breathtaking view of the massif from his property, the Château de Vauvenargues, the mountain must have taunted Picasso. Contemporary artist Fabienne Verdier produced a series of striking, large-format paintings for a solo exhibit at the Musée Granet “Sur les terres de Cézanne.”

Talented Aix-en-Provence photographer Camille Moirenc compiled 49 photos in a series called “Sacrée Montagne – Mouvances et Permanence” – Sacred Mountain – Movements and Permanence. Some of Moirenc’s photographs of Mont Sainte Victoire date from as early as 2004, but most are more recent, taken in 2020 and 2021.

Walking from Rousset

Let’s start by exploring the small village of Rousset at the foot of the mountain. When you leave the villa, there are two options at the end of the Mévouillon road. You follow the road. At the first intersection, you can turn right and go to the village. Or you can turn left and walk on a paved road that will take you to a vineyard called Mas de Cadenet. You can also turn right at the end of the Mévouillon road, cross the D7 and find a hiking trail along Montagne Sainte-Victoire.

On the way, you can discover the Saint-Privat Chapel, a small religious building located in the commune of Rousset. It was built in the twelfth century and is dedicated to Saint Privat, a local saint. The chapel is an interesting example of the Romanesque architecture of the region, with its stone walls and barrel vaults. It was restored in the nineteenth century and is now used for occasional religious ceremonies. The Saint-Privat Chapel is generally closed to the public except for special religious ceremonies. However, it can be admired from the outside at any time of the year.

In Rousset, there are also opportunities for hikes at Moulin de Rousset. The Moulin de Rousset is an old olive oil mill located in the commune of Rousset. It dates back to the 17th century and was restored in the 20th century to make it a museum. The mill has a stone grinder and a press; visitors can see how oil was produced then. The museum also offers exhibitions on the region’s history, including the olive tree’s culture and the production of olive oil in Provence. The Moulin de Rousset is open to the public every day except Tuesday, with regular guided tours in summer and by reservation in winter.

Marcher depuis Rousset

Commençons par découvrir le petit village de Rousset qui se trouve au pied de la Montagne. En sortant de la villa, deux possibilités s’offrent à vous au bout du chemin de Mévouillon. Vous suivez la route. A la première intersection, vous pouvez tourner à droite et vous rendre dans le village. Ou à la même intersection, vous pouvez tourner à gauche, vous pourrez alors marcher sur une route goudronnée qui vous mènera vers un vignoble appelé Mas de Cadenet. Au bout du chemin de Mévouillon, vous pouvez aussi choisir de tourner à droite. Vous traversez la D7. Vous pourrez trouver un sentier de randonnée qui loge la Montagne Sainte-Victoire.

Sur le chemin, vous pourrez découvrir la Chapelle Saint-Privat. La chapelle Saint Privat est un petit édifice religieux situé sur le territoire de la commune de Rousset. Elle a été construite au XIIe siècle et est dédiée à Saint Privat, un saint local. La chapelle est un exemple intéressant de l’architecture romane de la région, avec ses murs en pierre et ses voûtes en berceau. Elle a été restaurée au XIXe siècle et est aujourd’hui utilisée pour des cérémonies religieuses occasionnelles. La Chapelle est généralement fermée au public, sauf pour les cérémonies religieuses spéciales. Cependant, elle peut être admirée de l’extérieur à tout moment de l’année.

A Rousset, il y a aussi des possibilités de randonnées au Moulin de Rousset. Le Moulin de Rousset est un ancien moulin à huile d’olive situé sur le territoire de la commune de Rousset. Il date du XVIIe siècle et a été restauré au XXe siècle pour en faire un musée. Le moulin est équipé d’une meule en pierre et d’un pressoir, et les visiteurs peuvent voir comment l’huile était produite à l’époque.

Le musée propose également des expositions sur l’histoire de la région, notamment sur la culture de l’olivier et la production d’huile d’olive en Provence. Le Moulin de Rousset est ouvert au public tous les jours sauf le mardi, avec des visites guidées régulières en été et sur réservation en hiver.

Easy Family Hikes

The Hermitage de Saint-Ser walk is a short, easy hike (about 1-hour round trip) leading to the chapel. Start walking from the Saint-Ser car park, which is located 10 minutes from the villa. At about 638 meters above sea level, the hermitage is accessible on foot via hiking trails. Named after Saint-Sévère, a Christian saint from the 5th century, the hermitage was built in the 17th century, although hermits have lived there since the 5th century. The Hermitage de Saint-Ser is a pilgrimage site and a popular tourist attraction in the region, offering breathtaking views of the Arc Valley and the surrounding mountains.

La balade de l’Ermitage de Saint-Ser : une courte promenade facile (environ 1 heure aller-retour) qui mène à l’Ermitage de Saint-Ser. Le départ se fait du parking Saint-Ser qui se situe à 10 minutes de la villa. Il est situé à environ 638 mètres d’altitude et est accessible à pied par des sentiers de randonnée. L’ermitage tire son nom de Saint-Sévère, qui est un saint chrétien du Ve siècle a été construit au XVIIe siècle, bien que des ermites y aient vécu depuis le Ve siècle. L’Ermitage de Saint-Ser est un lieu de pèlerinage et une attraction touristique populaire de la région, offrant une vue imprenable sur la vallée de l’Arc et les montagnes environnantes.

Moderate Hikes

The Oppidum: The hike to the Oppidum from the Deux Aiguilles parking lot is moderate. The trail is well-marked but includes steep sections and rocky terrain, making the walk more challenging for those not accustomed to hiking in the mountains. It is recommended to wear hiking shoes and bring enough water. The Oppidum is an ancient fortified village dating back to the Iron Age, which is said to have been continuously inhabited between the 6th and 2nd century BC. It is located on a rocky plateau and offers a panoramic view of the surrounding area.

L’oppidum : La randonnée jusqu’à l’oppidum depuis le parking des Deux Aiguilles est considérée comme modérée. Le sentier est bien balisé mais comporte des passages escarpés et des sections raides, ce qui peut rendre la randonnée plus difficile pour les personnes peu habituées à la marche en montagne. Il est recommandé de porter des chaussures de randonnée et d’apporter de l’eau en quantité suffisante.C’est un ancien village fortifié datant de l’âge du fer, qui aurait été habité de manière continue entre le 6ème et le 2ème siècle avant J.C. L’oppidum est situé sur un plateau rocheux et offre une vue panoramique sur les environs.

Refuge Cézanne: To reach Refuge Cézanne from the Deux Aiguilles parking lot, you can follow the marked hiking trail towards the refuge. The trail is well-indicated and steadily climbs through a pine forest. The hike to Refuge Cézanne from the Deux Aiguilles parking lot is moderate. The walk takes about two (2) hours and includes a reasonably steep climb during the first hour, followed by a steep descent towards the refuge. It is important to note that this hike can be strenuous for people not used to hiking or in good physical condition. It is recommended to wear comfortable hiking shoes, bring enough water, and follow safety guidelines.

Le refuge Cézanne : Pour rejoindre le refuge Cézanne depuis le parking des Deux Aiguilles, vous pouvez suivre le sentier de randonnée balisé en direction du refuge. Le sentier est bien indiqué et suit une montée régulière à travers la forêt de pins. La randonnée au Refuge Cézanne à partir du parking des Deux Aiguilles est considérée comme une randonnée modérée. La randonnée dure environ 2 heures et comporte une montée assez raide pendant la première heure, suivie d’une descente raide vers le refuge. Il est important de noter que cette randonnée peut être difficile pour les personnes qui ne sont pas habituées à la randonnée ou qui ne sont pas en bonne condition physique. Il est recommandé de porter des chaussures de randonnée confortables, de prendre de l’eau en quantité suffisante et de respecter les consignes de sécurité.

Challenging Hikes

Imoucha Trail: The trail starts from the Bimont parking lot, located about 30 minutes by car from Rousset. The circuit is about 6 km and will take you through the north slopes of Sainte-Victoire.

Le sentier Imoucha : le départ se fait depuis le parking de Bimont, situé à environ 30 minutes en voiture de Rousset.Le circuit fait environ 6 km et vous fera découvrir les versants nord de la Sainte-Victoire.

Ridge Trail: The trail starts from the Saint-Ser parking lot, located about 10 minutes by
car from Rousset. The circuit is about 9 km and follows the crests of Sainte-Victoire. There is also a trailhead in Vauvenargues; climbing Pic des Mouches is more accessible while the drive is extended.

Le sentier des Crêtes : le départ se fait depuis le parking Saint-Ser, situé à environ 10 minutes en voiture de Rousset. Ce circuit fait environ 9 km et suit les crêtes de la Sainte-Victoire. Le départ peut se faire aussi au départ de Vauvenargues, mais le trajet en voiture est plus long. Mais la montée jusqu’au Pic des Mouches est plus facile.

Croix de Provence Hike: A challenging hike (about 5 hours round trip) that leads to the top of Montagne Sainte-Victoire, with a panoramic view of the region. This hike starts from several locations.

La randonnée de la Croix de Provence : une randonnée difficile (environ 5 heures aller-retour) qui mène au sommet de la montagne Sainte-Victoire, avec une vue panoramique sur la région.Elle peut commencer à différents endroits.

Grande Boucle de la Sainte-Victoire: The hike usually starts from the Sainte-Victoire parking lot, which is located 10 minutes by car from Rousset. The circuit is about 16 km long and can be hiked in both directions.

La Grande Boucle de la Sainte-Victoire : le départ se fait généralement depuis le parking de Sainte-Victoire, situé à 10 minutes en voiture de Rousset. Le circuit fait environ 16 km et peut être parcouru dans les deux sens.

Hiking in Provence

Provence has many hiking trails for all levels. The Luberon and Alpilles hills are moderate. Meanwhile, the slopes near Mont Sainte-Victoire, Mont Ventoux, and the Dentelles de Montmirail are steeper. You can also head to the coast in either direction (east or west) from Marseille. There are beautiful hikes along the coast, although some trails could be challenging if you suffer from vertigo. The standard hiking rules in Provence apply: wear good shoes, carry sunscreen, hats, extra water, snacks, and take a mobile phone.
