Exclusive Interview: How S.L. Immersion Is Changing Language Education in France
Carolyne Kauser-Abbott · Inspire · Learning FrenchThere is something to be said for immersion in a culture and language that challenges you to speak. Years ago, after graduating high school with the required level of French, I spent a year in Quebec City. It was my sink-or-swim situation to be understood by my French-speaking landlady. Looking back, immersion in French improved my language skills.
Celtina Masardo, founder of S.L. Immersion in Avignon, has built a company focused on immersive French learning across France. In this interview, Celtina explains how her approach centers on real-life experiences to improve language skills. Please continue reading for her insights into how S.L. Immersion transforms language education.
Launching S.L. Immersion
▼Can you share your background as a French teacher?
I hold a master’s degree in French as a Foreign Language, and from the very beginning, I knew I wanted to work with international learners. What truly motivated me was not just teaching the language itself but teaching it to foreigners. For me, this dimension is essential.
Language learning is not simply about mastering grammar and vocabulary; it is about connecting with people and understanding a new culture. When you enter a new country, learning its language is the key to understanding its people and way of life. My motivation as a French teacher is to share both my language and culture and help learners truly connect with France.
▼ What inspired you to start S.L. Immersion in Provence after teaching elsewhere?
Before founding S.L. Immersion in 2012, I taught French at language centres in Switzerland and Lyon. While I enjoyed teaching, I often felt something was missing between learning and real life. This desire to offer students a more authentic experience of French led me to create something different.
I wanted them to experience the language in everyday moments, sharing meals, conversations, and genuine connections. That’s why I began welcoming students into my home in Provence. During immersion, they could live and study French in a warm, immersive environment.
As interest in the programs grew, I expanded S.L. Immersion across France. I selected passionate teachers deeply connected to their regions and experienced with foreign learners. Today, our programs blend personalized lessons, cultural experiences, and real exchanges, creating a unique, transformative way to learn French.
What is S.L. Immersion?
▼ How would you describe S.L. Immersion?
S.L. Immersion is more than a language school—it is an immersive experience where students live in French daily. By staying in their teacher’s home and participating in everyday activities and cultural events, students naturally develop their language skills in real-life situations.
Every program is tailored with individual lessons that match each student’s needs, level, and goals. S.L. Immersion focuses on building both competence and confidence, creating meaningful connections, and helping students speak French comfortably in real situations. Learning goes beyond textbooks, emphasizing true engagement.

The S.L. Immersion Team
▼ What are the qualification requirements for your French teachers?
All our teachers qualify to teach French as a foreign language and hold a degree in FLE (Français Langue Étrangère) or an equivalent qualification. We select them for their ability to adapt to each learner and create a truly immersive and supportive learning experience, not just for their formal qualifications.
While all our teachers can teach general French at any level, some also have advanced expertise in specific areas such as business French, teacher training, or exam preparation. Several are certified examiners, which gives them a deeper understanding of official requirements and enables them to guide students preparing for exams like the DELF or DALF with precision and confidence.
▼ How do you select your French teachers?
Our selection process is rigorous and deeply human. We conduct thorough interviews with every teacher, online or in person, to assess their qualifications, experience, and ability to adapt, listen, and build meaningful connections with learners. For immersion programs, we also emphasize the living environment.
We conduct detailed remote visits to ensure each home meets our high standards, guided by a strict quality charter. Comfort, cleanliness, and a welcoming atmosphere are essential.
Each teacher brings their own personality and teaching style, which is something we truly value. This diversity is part of what makes each immersion unique. At the same time, we provide clear guidelines and a recommended teaching approach to ensure consistency in quality and learning outcomes.
Ultimately, we select teachers who share our vision: offering not just lessons, but a genuine human experience where students feel supported, confident, and fully immersed in French life.
Immersion Program
▼ Can you describe a typical daily schedule for an immersion program at a French instructor’s home?
A typical day during a one-week immersion program is natural, enjoyable, and fully integrated into real French life. It usually begins with breakfast shared with your teacher, where guided conversations gently wake up your French and build confidence from the start.
After breakfast, you have French lessons at the teacher’s home or outdoors, as you prefer. Lessons remain interactive and personalized to goals and real-life situations. Lunch follows —shared with your teacher, another chance for guided, relaxed practice.
The afternoon offers flexibility: enjoy free time, explore independently, or join your teacher for activities such as local markets, village walks, or cultural sites. Every moment is an opportunity to practice French naturally.
Dinner with your teacher closes the day, allowing for another relaxed exchange that reinforces what you’ve learned in a warm, authentic setting.

Tailored French Language Program
▼ How do you personalize lessons for different levels, from beginners to advanced speakers preparing for DELF/DALF exams?
We place personalization at the heart of our approach. Before the program begins, we carefully assess each student’s level using our French level test available on our website.
Our teachers also use this tool to ensure accurate, consistent evaluations. From there, they fully tailor each learning path. We never follow a one-size-fits-all approach. Instead, each teacher designs a program to match the student’s level, objectives, pace, and learning style. We provide a range of pedagogical tools and resources, but we encourage teachers to create personalized content to meet each student’s specific needs.
For beginners, the focus is on building confidence through simple structures, practical vocabulary, and guided conversation. For more advanced learners, especially those preparing for exams such as the DELF or DALF, our teachers use recognized, official methodologies. Many of them have certified training and, in some cases, are examiners themselves, enabling them to provide precise and effective preparation.
In all cases, learning is always connected to real-life situations, so students can immediately apply what they learn in a natural and meaningful way.
A Week of French
▼ How many hours of private or small-group lessons are included in a typical week, and what’s the student-to-teacher ratio?
Our programs are designed to combine structured learning with continuous, natural practice.
In a typical one-week immersion program, students benefit from around 15 hours of formal lessons, either one-on-one or in very small groups (5 to 12 people), depending on the program.
Beyond structured lessons, what truly makes the difference is the additional time spent practicing French throughout the day. Students are immersed in about 25 hours of real-life communication during meals, daily interactions, and activities with their teacher.
Learning doesn’t stop when the lesson ends. These “invisible hours” of guided conversation are essential because they let students naturally and meaningfully reinforce what they’ve learned.
Overall, this represents nearly 40 hours of personalized coaching with an expert who will guide you every step of the way, based on your individual learning needs.
Our immersion programs primarily use one-on-one teaching to ensure personalized attention. For group programs, we keep groups small to maintain high interaction and individual support.

Home Away from Home
▼ What accommodations and meals can students expect at an instructor’s home?
Students are welcomed into their teacher’s home in a comfortable, carefully selected environment that reflects our quality standards and values.
S.L. Immersion aims to offer premium comfort while maintaining a warm, authentic atmosphere where students feel at home. Each student has a private room; bathrooms may be private or shared, depending on the teacher. Meals are essential, shared with the teacher, providing valuable moments for conversation and cultural exchange.
Our teachers adapt to each student’s dietary needs, including vegetarian, vegan, and other dietary requirements. More than accommodation, this living experience is central to immersion. It creates a safe, welcoming space where students can relax, build confidence, and practice French naturally throughout the day.
S.L. Immersion in France
▼ Are there S.L. Immersion programs throughout France?
Beyond Provence, S.L. Immersion has built a network of about thirty carefully selected teachers across France. We are present in several key regions, including the Paris area, Brittany, and the South-West, offering students the opportunity to explore a wide range of landscapes, cultures, and ways of life.
Each destination provides a unique immersion experience, whether in a vibrant city, a coastal region, or the countryside. At the same time, we ensure a consistent level of quality, personalization, and attention across all our programs. This diversity allows us to match each student not only with the right teacher, but also with the environment that best suits their personality and learning goals.

Explore France and Learn
▼ Can a student combine two locations in one week if they are close together?
Students can combine different locations during their stay, especially for longer immersion experiences. We often encourage this over several weeks. Some students embark on a personalized “Tour de France,” which we design and organize based on their preferences.
At S.L. Immersion, we coordinate with teachers to ensure smooth transitions between destinations and provide continuous pedagogical follow-up. This creates a seamless, enriching learning journey across regions like Provence, Brittany, and Paris. Students progress in French while discovering the country’s rich cultures, accents, and ways of life.
We believe this is a wonderful way to experience immersion, as each new destination brings a fresh perspective, while reinforcing everything the student has already learned.
Group Immersion
▼ Are there group options for couples, families, or friends, and how do you match levels within small groups?
Yes, we offer dedicated group programs designed for couples, friends, or individuals who wish to share the experience with others. These are not standard add-ons, but fully designed programs, created specifically for small groups.
We intentionally keep group sizes small, typically between 5 and 12 participants, to ensure high interaction and a personalized learning experience. Groups are carefully formed based on students’ levels, allowing everyone to progress in a coherent, supportive environment.
Beyond the learning aspect, these programs are also a wonderful opportunity to meet people from around the world who share similar interests and motivations. Many of our students leave not only with improved French but also with meaningful connections and lasting memories.
S.L. Immersion’s Star Rating
▼ What feedback have students shared about progress in speaking confidence after a Provence immersion stay?
The feedback we receive from our students is consistently very positive, especially regarding speaking confidence. We are proud to have over 170 five-star reviews on Google, reflecting the quality and impact of the experience we offer.
Many students say their progress exceeds expectations. What surprises them most is not only how much they improve but how naturally it happens. They often say they didn’t feel they were “working hard” because learning happens through real conversations, shared moments, and genuine experiences.
By the end of their stay, students typically feel more confident speaking French, more comfortable understanding native speakers, and more at ease expressing themselves in everyday situations. For the S.L. Immersion team, this is the true success of immersion: learning efficiently while enjoying every step of the journey.
S.L. Immersion Pricing
▼ How much do programs cost for different durations, and what extras, like airport transfers, are available?
The cost of our programs varies by length of stay and selected options, as each immersion experience is personalized. Our programs are designed to be seamless and comprehensive. They typically include accommodation at the teacher’s home, daily breakfast with guided conversations, and half- or full-board options, where meals serve as natural opportunities for exchange and language practice.
Students also benefit from private French lessons and a range of activities fully integrated into the immersion experience. Each of these moments is guided by the teacher, allowing students to practice French continuously in a natural and meaningful way.
For those who wish to go even further, we also offer a variety of optional experiences, such as cultural visits, wine tastings, and activities tailored to personal interests, allowing each student to enrich their stay as they see fit.
Additional services, such as airport or train station pick-up and drop-off, can be arranged to ensure a smooth, stress-free arrival. Our goal is to create a fully immersive, comfortable, and enriching experience where every detail supports both learning and enjoyment.
A Final Mot
▼ Anything else you can add to help our readers better understand S.L. Immersion?
More than anything, S.L.Immersion is a human adventure. Beyond learning French, it’s about meeting people, connecting with locals, and sharing real moments of life. Many of our students don’t just leave with improved language skills; they leave with memories, emotions, and sometimes even lasting friendships.
For us, this is what truly matters. Learning a language is important, but what makes it unforgettable is the experience behind it, the people you meet, and the moments you share.
