Place Favier is the prettiest square in St-Rémy-de-Provence, with beautiful trees that provide welcome shade in the summer. It is lined with a variety of restaurants, and my favourite of these is Maison Favier.

Owner Jérôme Orlandini describes his cuisine as “creative, seasonal, local, and fresh, featuring a distinct Mediterranean influence. It spans everything from Provence to Italy, and extends across the Maghreb region of north Africa.” Maison Favier is Orlandini’s second restaurant in St-Rémy, following Bienbon, which hosted chefs-in-residence for months at a time.

Maison Favier’s menu is small to focus on quality, typically featuring 2-3 starters, main courses, and desserts. It is updated every month to take advantage of seasonal ingredients. And diners with food intolerances are welcome, as the restaurant makes every effort to accommodate them.

“A true chef is working in the kitchen,” says Orlandini. “We don’t use frozen ingredients, and we strive to ensure that every dish on the plate reflects a genuine, unique personality.”

Maison Favier offers not one but three places to dine: in the cozy dining room, on the quiet terrace in back, and on the shady square—popular on sunny days.

The restaurant has been so successful that Orlandini has opened a breakfast place next door, Café Favier, which serves homemade breads and pastries, eggs, and coffee drinks. And for those looking for a place to stay, he also has several charming bed-and-breakfasts he calls Les Maisons Secrètes.

Keith Van Sickle

Keith and Val Van Sickle made their first trip to Provence decades ago, and it was love at first sight. After that, they came back every year until 2008, when they began a part-time life there, splitting their time between Provence and California.

Over the years, they’ve travelled all over Provence, seeing sights both well-known and obscure. Their French friends have introduced them to favourite restaurants and wineries and picnic spots and taught them funny local expressions (not all for polite company).

Keith now shares this local knowledge in his new book, An Insider’s Guide to Provence. Packed with the Van Sickles’ favourite things to see and do, it’s a must-have for anyone travelling to this glorious corner of France.

Keith previously published two books about the couple's experiences in Provence. One Sip at a Time: Learning to Live in Provence, and Are We French Yet?, both are available from Amazon.
