What Makes Provencal Interior Design So Irresistibly Beautiful?

The following guest article on Mediterranean l’art de vivre comes from the team at Herman & Arnal, an architectural and interior design firm based in Mougins, a village in the Alpes-Maritimes near Cannes and Grasse. Below are some key elements of Provencal interior design that embrace simplicity, neutral palettes, and celebrate indoor-outdoor living.

Mediterranean Living

There’s something different about the air in the South of France. A gentleness you feel as soon as you open the shutters in the morning, the light filtering gently through the branches of an olive tree. Here, time seems to slow down. Every detail counts, without ever striving for perfection: a curtain that dances in the wind, a wooden table marked by shared meals, floor tiles that retain the memory of footsteps. The Mediterranean art of living is a balance between simplicity and beauty, between utility and emotion. And in this way of living, Provence has much to teach us.

The spirit of the South, between light, matter and colour

1. Letting in the light, letting out the shadows

In Provence, light is everywhere. It permeates the day, changing colours and bringing interiors to life. It’s not just a question of large bay windows: it’s also about capturing light with neutral materials, whitewashed walls and light fabric curtains. You learn to play with it, to tame it. A room can be transformed simply by opening a window at the right time.

2. Selecting materials that tell a story

Perfectly imperfect. Nothing is set in stone in the South of France’s houses. Materials evolve, taking on a patina and retaining the traces of life. An old beam in the ceiling, a slightly irregular stone floor, a hand-forged handle: these elements are nothing spectacular, but give the space a soul. In our work, we try to preserve what’s already there—what makes a house unique, sometimes even a little imperfect—and that’s fine.

3. Colours from the landscape

Here, the palette draws from the outdoors: the powdery greens of the olive trees, the shutters’ faded blues, and the dry earth’s ochre tones. We’re not looking for effect but harmony. Nothing is too vivid, but nothing is set in stone either. We play with textiles and ceramics, a colourful vase on a chest of drawers, a cushion in a lavender hue. It’s all in the details and coherence with the environment.

Housing as an extension of the landscape

1. Living outside, thinking inside

In Provence, the boundaries between indoors and outdoors are blurred. A terrace becomes a room on its right, a low wall can serve as an improvised bench, and a fig tree can become a roof for a siesta. Interior design in the Provencal style also means providing breathing space: a reading corner near a window. This kitchen opens onto the living area, and a dining room opens onto the garden. Above all, it’s about creating a space where you feel like entertaining, without formalism, just for the pleasure of being together.

2. Anchor yourself in the place, listen to what it has to say

It’s not just the style that appeals to us in Provence. It’s the attention to place. A house is never a model to be reproduced. It must respond to the climate, the light, the landscape and, above all, the people who live there. In our projects, we always start by observing what the place has to say and what it has to offer. Then we respond with humility. Perhaps that’s what the Mediterranean art of living is all about: listening, rather than decorating.
