The Apartment:
From the pedestrian-friendly streets of Apt, climb up the stairs to the penthouse where this bright apartment awaits. Completely renovated, Le Petit Delphia has a full kitchen, dining room, salon, and large bedroom with an ensuite. The comfortable space is open and flooded with natural light. Enjoy historic Apt, its Saturday market and easy access to the Luberon Valley’s charming villages and famous vineyards. Le Petit Delphia is a perfect pied-a-terre for holidays in Provence.
The Area:
Apt’s Saturday market is the biggest in the Luberon Valley and is also historic—it goes back to the 12th century. It has everything you want: wonderful fruits and vegetables, olives, cheese, wine, honey, flowers, colourful tablecloths…the list goes on and on. During the peak summer months, nearly 500 vendors sell their goods—if you can’t find what you are looking for, it may not exist! There is also a smaller farmer’s market on Tuesday mornings.
The history of modern-day Apt stretches back to Paleolithic times, as evidenced by artifacts on display in the Musée d’Apt Apta Julia Annex. Before the Romans, a Gallic settlement called Vulgientes existed in the exact location. In roughly 45 BC, the Romans destroyed the town and rebuilt it under the direction of Julius Caesar, naming it Apta Julia.
The production of candied fruit in Apt dates to the time of the Popes in Avignon (1309 to 1376). According to archival texts, these religious figures enjoyed crystallized fruit as gifts. Much later in the 19th century, the popularity of this specialty from Apt spread as far as England for use in fruit cakes and other desserts. The candied clementine is so perfect it looks like a glass paperweight.
