Find Out Why You Should Spend a Sunday in Toulon
Sunday is an ideal time to visit Toulon as the traffic is lighter, it’s easier to park, and the market is in full swing. It’s a good market, with the top part being North African stalls, leading down to the fruit and veg section and ending in clothes near the harbour.
Visit this port city on a Sunday for the lively street market scene. Visit Toulon any day of the week and take advantage of the 45-minute ride during the tourist season train (le petit train). There are some good restaurants and an interesting museum that includes Provencal artwork.
Why Visit Toulon?
Toulon, like Marseille, is an ancient port city dating back to the Phoenicians, when, in the 7th century BC they established trading depots along the coast. In the 2nd century BC, the Romans took over and founded a settlement in Toulon, named after Telo, the goddess of springs. Toulon’s naturally deep protected harbour became a shelter for trading ships, and later, of course, warships. In those days, its main export was a purple dye used in Roman imperial robes, made from a local sea snail.
