Saint-Cannat Village Charm

Like many villages in the region, Saint-Cannat’s history stretches back to Gallo-Roman times, with remains dating to the 5th century. The area and the town were impacted by a significant earthquake in 1909. The event damaged Notre Dame de Vie, the parish church, which was rebuilt in 1923. The Saint Cannat chapel (17th century) is also worth a visit.

Embrace village life among its 5,800 residents—every Tuesday morning, witness vibrant Provencal traditions come to life at the weekly market. Traditions like the annual transhumance and period architecture (fountains and washhouses (lavoirs)) add to the village charm. Stop by the Musée Suffren and discover the archives or inquire about guided tours.

Lambesc Village Highlights

A mere 20 kilometers from Aix-en-Provence, Lambesc (population 10,000) escapes mainstream tourist paths yet offers a rightful taste of Provençal authenticity. However, perhaps it should be with a long history of human settlement dating to the Stone and Bronze ages. Relics from a Celtic-Ligurian settlement confirm human presence in that area. Historians believe Lambesc was an important trading centre with a market called Oppidum Amboliacense that supplied goods to the Greek population in Massilla (today’s Marseille).

Lambesc has long been an agricultural centre, with olive groves, vineyards, fruit orchards, and vegetable crops. On Friday morning, the town is alive with market-day energy.

The town is steeped in history from the reigns of Kings Louis XIV, XV, and XVI. Step back in time to historic mansions, religious landmarks, and the town’s centerpiece, the Jacquemard clock tower. Places of worship include Notre Dame de l’Assomption church (18th century), St Michel chapel and cemetery (12th century), and 11 oratories. Visit the Musée du Vieux Lambesc for additional historical information.
