Immerse in Nature: La Réserve des Monts d’Azur – A Provencal Paradise
Christine van der Linden · Explore · Hans Zeegers
Just an hour north of Cannes, nestled in the rolling hills, lies the enchanting La Réserve des Monts d’Azur. This natural reserve offers a perfect getaway for families, couples, and friends looking to immerse themselves in the serene beauty of the Provencal wilderness. Accessible via a picturesque route, this park is a sanctuary where wild animals have been reintroduced to their natural habitat, promising a day or weekend filled with wonder and discovery.

La Réserve des Monts d’Azur
Visitors can explore the park on foot or by horse-drawn carriage, guided by biology and biodiversity students personally trained by the founder, Dr. Patrice Longour. While both options provide unique experiences, walking tours allow for a more intimate encounter with the animals, making the 2-hour hike a highly recommended choice. Accustomed to human presence, the animals exhibit natural behaviours, providing a fascinating glimpse into their world.

Dr. Longour, a dedicated veterinarian, founded the reserve to shed light on the often-overlooked European fauna. Unlike Africa’s or Asia’s well-known wildlife, Europe’s heritage remains relatively obscure. The European bison, once extinct in the wild except for a few in Poland, and the Przewalski’s horse, historically depicted in cave paintings, now roam freely in the reserve, contributing to the area’s biodiversity.

His work in Africa ignited Dr. Longour’s passion for wildlife conservation, particularly in Botswana’s Okavango Delta, the world’s largest wildlife reserve. This experience inspired him to create a similar haven in Europe. After a serendipitous search, he found the ideal location in the Var region, which he remembered from childhood for its diverse habitats and abundant wildlife.

Establishing the reserve was not without challenges. French laws provided little protection for wildlife, often viewing them as pests or game. Overcoming political and legal hurdles, Dr. Longour created a place where species such as chamois, deer, wild boar, wolves, and lynx coexist. The return of large herbivores, such as the European bison and the Przewalski’s horse, has restored the natural dynamics of the area.

Stay Nearby
Accommodation options within the reserve cater to various preferences. Choose from eco-lodges for an up-close wildlife experience, charming hotel rooms at Le Petit Manoir for luxury, or spacious, light-filled rooms in La Villa Bioclimatique. Each option is designed to minimize environmental impact while maximizing comfort and enjoyment.
