Gordes, a Beautiful Hillside Village in the Luberon
Explore · Our House in Provence
Contributor blog post by Michel:
Gordes is a beautiful village in the Luberon region about 1 hour southeast of our home in Sablet. The obviously strategic site where Gordes sits has been occupied since prehistoric times. The stone buildings were built against the base of the cliffs and spiral up around the rock to the top where the chateau was built with a panoramic view over fields and forests and small perched villages.
for some history on this perched village. Gordes is classified as one of Les Plus Beaux Villages de France, with good reason it enjoys a commanding view of the Luberon Valley. According to Michel, the village is also the #1 tourist attraction in the Luberon, which translates into crowds and traffic jambs in the busiest months of the year.
Must see in Gordes:
The Pol Mara museum located in the old castle
Chapelle des Pénitents Blancs (art gallery)
Tuesday morning market
Nearby Bories village
Nearby Sénanque Abbey (Cistercian abbey from the 12th century)
