The Night 8 Cézannes were Stolen in Aix
It was back in August 1961, a long-forgotten incident, and thanks to local historian Alain Paire for sending details of this fascinating story. The thieves climbed the garden walls then up the decorative ironwork of the façade to reach the first floor paintings.

The Return of the ‘Petit Trains’ of Provence
The local petit-trains which have mostly been laid-up over the winter are coming back to our streets – good news for visitors with little ones or for elderly people or for those who want a whistle-stop tour with commentary. They really are a great idea.

Aix Centre-Ville: More Regeneration
Now that the area around the Rotonde is sorted – and it does look lots better – the authorities have turned their attention to another large area ripe for regeneration: the places des Precheurs, Verdun and Madeleine as well as rue Thiers.

New Cézanne Drawings
The art world in the US is a-buzz with the discovery of a Cezanne drawing and a watercolour hidden away at the back of two pictures in the Barnes collection in Philadelphia. The drawing illustrated here is, I’m sure, the side view of Jas de Bouffan with the farm buildings …

Roman Finds at the Musée Granet
Aix must be a paradise for archaeologists: building work in town often yields ancient foundations and sewers, but sometimes sumptuous Roman mosaic dining room floors, everyday pottery and glass from the table, and even jewellery, oil lamps and statues. Violets at Tourrettes sur Loup
Violets are one of the first signs of spring, a welcome sight as they peep out from grassy banks and the undergrowth in woody areas. At Tourrettes sur Loup they are centre stage in the local economy and also in the annual Fete des Violettes.
