New Memoir, ‘A Year in French Life’ by Espinasse Co-authors – Our Book Review

Books on Provence · Carolyne Kauser-Abbott · Inspire

Kristin Espinasse, beloved for her evocative portraits of French living, invites readers back into her world with A Year in French Life, Volume 2. Kristin’s writing sparkles with sincerity, drawing us into the gentle rhythms and quiet surprises of everyday life in France. This year, her daughter Jacqueline joined the adventure, contributing her own voice to French Word-a-Day. In this review, we explore how their stories intertwine, celebrating both the book’s charm and the unique mother-daughter partnership at its heart.

About the Authors

For more than two decades, Kristin Espinasse has woven tales that bridge cultures, all inspired by the golden light of Provence. What began in 2002 as her blog, ‘French Word-a-Day,’ blossomed into a celebration of everyday wonders and the beauty of language. Through her collaborations with ‘France Today’ and her beloved books, Words in a French Life (2007) and Blossoming in Provence (2011), Kristin has become a trusted companion for anyone enchanted by French culture. You can also find our review of ‘Blossoming in Provence‘ here.

In 2021, the French government awarded Kristin La Médaille des Valeurs Francophones, a gold medal, for her dedication to sharing French language and culture.

Born in the sun-drenched city of Aix-en-Provence, Jacqueline Espinasse moves effortlessly between English and French, bridging the cultures of France and the United States. Now calling New York City home, she embraces both its marvels and its hurdles. In 2025, Jacqueline began sharing her perspective through French Word-A-Day, with many of her vibrant stories featured in A Year in French Life, Volume 2.

Summary of the Book

A Year in French Life, Volume 2, dives even deeper into the joys and challenges of personal and cultural discovery, artfully blending Kristin and Jacqueline’s experiences as they navigate new worlds. With its focus on transitions and the richness of cross-cultural growth, the book invites readers to ponder family, identity, and transformation. One standout for me is the article GATEAU, which captures a heartfelt mother-daughter bond across miles and time zones.

Key Aspects and Highlights

Overflowing with warmth, Volume Two follows the familiar rhythm of the calendar, dedicating each chapter to a month of the year. The journey opens in January, when Kristin’s spontaneous act of kindness toward someone she meets at church sets a generous, uplifting tone for the stories that follow.

Each month features around four lively articles sprinkled with French expressions, followed by a handy glossary to help readers savour and learn the language. A Year in French Life, Volume 2, is not only a delightful read but also a fun way to expand your French vocabulary. The memoir traces the Espinasse family’s adventures on both sides of the Atlantic, with every chapter offering glimpses into their lives and breathtaking photos of the sunlit South of France.
