The French Connection

We have Keith Van Sickle to thank for introducing us to lovely Annette and the chance to discover more about this gift box concept.

Annette Charlton

Devoted Francophiles, Annette Charlton and her family (husband and three children) have split time between Newcastle, Australia and Brittany, France, for a decade. The decision to buy a second home in France resulted from her fascination with the French lifestyle. Before ever visiting France, Annette began searching the internet for a second home in the countryside. Her husband preferred the south coast of England, but Annette eventually won him over. In 2009, they purchased a stone cottage in rural Brittany. Then the real fun began. Annette documents their adventures and mishaps in her blog – A French Collection.

“I was a Francophile long before I visited France.”

It’s a long way from Australia to France, but since the Charlton family bought the property, they return annually (or more often) for holidays. Living part-time in France has given the family an appreciation for French cultural nuances and a taste for exploration. Annette shares her passion with other ladies on small group tours in Paris, Normandy and Brittany.

Spending time in France flames her infatuation. Now more than ever, Annette appreciates French decorative style. Annette decided to bring the French je ne sais quoi lifestyle products together in My Beautiful French Collection Gift Boxes from interiors to gardens to the art of the table. During Annette’s travels in France, she has built up a network of artisans, small businesses and contacts that she works with while creating these boxes destined for lovers of French style worldwide.

When did you launch My Beautiful French Collection Box?

The concept of My Beautiful French Collection Box (MBFCB) launched in late 2019 after I returned from one of my French tours. Our first prettily packaged box shipped in June 2020. It was themed ‘Rejuvenate & Take Care’ and was a special box created to bring extra joy during the height of Covid-19 and lockdowns.

Can you explain the concept?

Not everyone can travel to France, so I bring France to everyone in a pretty ribboned box delivered to your doorstep. Filled with beauty products, books, clothing, jewellery, sweet things, stationery or homewares, each box is uniquely themed and available either as a single box or as a yearly subscription paid and shipped quarterly.

Initially, I created My Beautiful French Collection Boxes for Australians as there was nothing like this in Australia, but I quickly made the boxes available worldwide due to demand. We now ship globally, and everyone can enjoy joie de vivre with a luxury MBFCB box.

Does the theme change quarterly?

Yes, each quarter, I create a gift box around a theme and colour palette. Our first box – ‘Rejuvenate & Take Care’ – was filled with items to relax and enjoy while being isolated at home. The pretty pastel colours and all the contents were delicate and calming.

The following December box was themed ‘New Beginnings’ as the package arrived just before the New Year, and everyone was looking forward to a fresh start. The box with feature colours pink and Provencal olive green was a hit. There a four (4) themed boxes per year in March, June, September and December.

What can we expect to find in a box?

No two boxes are alike and designed so that you receive an assortment of French and French-inspired goodies during the year if you sign up for a yearly subscription. The packages offer a little something for everyone. Any small clothing items and exquisite jewellery are fit all, colours, scents and patterns are uniquely chosen, so there is always something fresh and new.

How do you select items for your boxes?

Living and travelling through France has given me the fantastic opportunity to experience the French way of life. Curating items is one of the most enjoyable things I do. I always approach this part of the process by thinking about what I would like (quality, uniqueness, feminine enough). Does this product represent good value for money, and will it add lasting beauty to my life? These are the criteria I use when curating my boxes.

You also have some limited-edition boxes. Roughly how times a year do you create special editions?

Our limited-edition boxes are the perfect choice for birthdays, Mother’s Day, anniversaries or even as a get-well gift. We try to offer at least two new editions each year. Bon Appetit, A Touch of France, and So French So Chic boxes are available online at the moment. These are a delightful box for gourmets and budding cooks, a pampering box of French beauty products and a box of chic items themed around French blue.
